I have installed XAMPP for Linux on my OpenSuSE 10.2 machine.

For the purpose of hosting a particular website, I had to make some changes to the file -

/opt/lampp/etc/php.ini

Changes such as

max upload file size
max session time
etc were to be made.

After I changed the values, Apache refuses to start with an error message.

Any ideas as to where I am going wrong?

No, not the slightest idea as long as you suppress the error message from apache.
