Symbolic link not allowed, Permission denied?

Postby Suthern » 05. December 2007 19:51

Howdy!
I've searched google and quite a few forums for assistance, but to no avail.

Problem:
I'm trying to host content from a directory OUTSIDE the htdocs directory (/home/sambaserve/apps/inventory/public). I've created a symlink from inside htdocs to the directory, but keep getting "403 Forbidden", and my error log shows "Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /opt/lampp/htdocs/inventory"

Proof the symlink works:
I can open a terminal and type "cd /opt/lampp/htdocs/inventory", and then "ls" gives me the contents of my /home/sambaserve/apps/inventory/public folder. Thus, I KNOW the symlink is good.

Permissions set:
my whole path (home, sambaserve, apps, inventory, public) has permissions to allow anyone read and execute, as well as all files within the public folder. The symlink has permissions the same as other files within in the htdocs folder.

Selinux:
I've changed selinux to 'permissive' instead of 'enforced' and restarted the server. Problem remains the same.

I've looked through all the httpd.conf files, and all of the relevant directorys seem to have AllowSymLinks set. Am I missing something obvious?

Here is my httpd.conf:
Code: Select all
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/opt/lampp" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/opt/lampp/logs/foo.log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/opt/lampp"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

As you can see from the above, I was also testing an Alias method, but that's not set up correctly, and is not the subject of this post. (gives me file not found)

I'm running the latest xampp 1.6.4 on CentOS 4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You simply missed a slash:

Code: Select all
Alias /inventory2 "home/sambaserve/apps/inventory/public"

That's wrong, you must qualify the path with a starting slash:

Code: Select all
Alias /inventory2 "/home/sambaserve/apps/inventory/public"

Regards
Scory

P.S.: It took me less than 10 seconds to find it out - is it really so difficult?

Apparently not to hard for some. '-) Thanks!

The problem remains though. Now both /inventory and /inventory2 give me "403 Forbidden".

Which means that the symlink is fine, but the /home/sambaserver/apps/inventory/public folder is off limits to the apache user for some unknown reason.

Thanks for the tip about the slash though!

Ahh, solution found. One directory on the path did not have execute permissions for everyone.
