webmin setup problems in xampp for linux slackware v12

1. I am trying to setup webmin on Linux slackware 12 and xampp for linux.
2. when I run ./setup.sh in the webmn directory, I cannot get past the third step when it asks for the path to perl
3. the path to perl in xamp is /opt/lampp/lib/perl5/5.8.7 but webmin reports that it canot run a perl test script, and setup of webmin aborts
4. webmin version 1.360 requires perl version 5, and that is what I've got
5. any help on this matter?
