mysql connection through php using odbc

I have php code that connects to a remote mysql database which only accepts odbc connections. When I try to access that php code through browser the error I get is:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'odbcca01.rightnow.com' (4) in /opt/lampp/htdocs/Store_Portal/dbconnect.php on line 9
Unable to connect to MySQL

This works fine when running from Windows but having trouble getting it work in Linux. I know that odbc drivers are built in for the Windows distribution. How do I make this work in Linux???
