How to start mysql database

Postby robwales » 15. April 2007 13:01

I have successfully installed XAMPP but I find that the MySQL database is deactivated in the status page. All apps seem to start fine and I have tried manually starting mysql using startmysql command but haven't been able to get it working.

I also get this message when starting phpmyadmin
Existing configuration file (./config.inc.php) is not readable.
but I assume that problem is related to the first.

Thanks for any assistance

I have successfully installed XAMPP

How have you done this exactly? (your commands in the shell)

Re successful install

I followed the steps on the XAMPP site. I ran into a problem with lang.tmp but found the solution in these forums which then allowed XAMPP to get to the XAMPP for Linux home page on my localhost server.

I have previously installed XAMPP on my notebook and got that working without too much problem.
I just tried to access the CD collection trial db and got this error;

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /opt/lampp/htdocs/xampp/cds.php on line 64
Could not connect to database!
Is MySQL running or did you change the password?[/quote]

I followed the steps on the XAMPP site.

I don't think so. Because...

I ran into a problem with lang.tmp

... if you really follow the instructions, you have no problem with "lang.tmp"...

So, what was your exact steps?

What I did

Postby robwales » 15. April 2007 21:38

It was a week ago that I downloaded and installed so the "exact" steps are a bit hazy.
Anyhow I downloaded the file from the XAMPP site
Ran the command - tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.6.tar.gz -C /opt
It didn't work until I placed the tar.gz file in my home folder,
Ran the tar again and it extracted and installed.
Then ran /opt/lampp/lampp security and modified the lampp user name and password
I created a shortcut to start the app in my internet folder. command is:
sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
Also created a stop command.
Tried to start and got an error like this one:

Warning: fopen(lang.tmp) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /Applications/xampp/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 2
Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /Applications/xampp/xamppfiles/htdocs/xampp/lang.php on line 4

Hunted around the forums and found the solution which included modifying the config.inc.php file

Solved that problem and could get XAMPP to open with the resulting problem I now have which is mysql not being activated.

This is as best as I can remember, Thanks for your time and I hope this helps
your diagnosis.

Let me know if you want me to send the modified config.inc.php

You are on OSX and not on Linux?

I am using Ubuntu 6.10

Sorry, I've never seen a directory "/Applications" on *nix. Only on OSX.

BTW:
Don't know what happens. Maybe you have to ask Oswald.
