How to upgrade one component in Xampp?

Hello,

I'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade one component in a Xampp installation.

What's the recommended way to update? Always wait till an 'official' upgrade is available or patch it yourself?

Upgrading PHP seems easy (replace the files in the php dir) but I don't have a clue how to update for example MySQL.
