PHP with symlinks

I have created a soft symlink in Mepis pointing to files in another directory.
When I try to load index.php from the linked directory I get the download dialog instead of it parsing the file. The same file in htdocs runs OK
I have no idea where to start looking for this, PHP? Apache?
Any ideas would be appreciated
