cannot run mysql console

im running xampp under mandriva. the installtion was succesful but i cannot seem to access a mysql console. im logged in as root and mysql -u root -p does not work, nor does mysql. phpmyadmin is functional.... so how do i access the mysql console so that i can start developing projects?
