Mysql.socket error with external program

Dear all,

I have a problem with mysql.
It is installed fine, in fact I can access to it with Myphpadmin without any problem.
But if I try to connect the Mysql database by external program like kexi or Knoda or other, I have the following error:
can't connect....mysql.socket is not permitted...or something like that.

I think that is caused because I can to enter as root.

Please, could you help me?
