Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Permission denied

I happily and succesfully installed XAMPP 1.5.1 on Fedora Core 4, and it worked great.
I copied my mysql 4.x data(myisam) over to /opt/var/lampp/mysql and great! Aok. nice. I was able to browse the data, both with the mysql gui client and with the phpmysql admin console. Again very nice!
1. I added users to mysql.
2. Deleted the anonymous user from mysql.
3. Ran the security script.
4. chown to mysql. chgrp to adm. (all required users are part of the adm group.)
5. chmod to give ALL rights to owner and group.
When I started XAMPP, mysql complained about some rights. So, I gave ALL rights also to other. (Very safe!<g>) Mysql then DID come up, but it informed me that ignored my.cnf because it was not secure. So, I removed rwx from o and now:
1) mysql.sock does not exist.
2) I get the following in the log:

Code: Select all
060124 12:29:29  mysqld started
060124 12:29:30 [ERROR] Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Permission denied
060124 12:29:30 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: /opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock ?
060124 12:29:30 [ERROR] Aborting

060124 12:29:30 [Note] /opt/lampp/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown complete

060124 12:29:30  mysqld ended

Also, quuerly enought the log file is created by user nobody. Oh, and I did go into the mysql script, and changed the user to mysql
