moving MySQL to a different directory

I would like to move the MySQL database on my machine to a different directory. I was told that by copying files & changing 'datadir=' address in my.cfg I tried this, but there seem to be more than one file w/that name. Is this the right method? where is the appropriate my.cfg file.

I meant 'my.cnf ' . the file I tried changing was the /opt/lampp/etc/my.cnf.
