Does it work?

No it does not.

It's not my system, and i'm no linux expert, but it will not start on this server at all... i get the following after trying to start xampp with FULL PATH. i.e. /opt/lampp/lampp start

XAMPP: /opt/lampp/lampp: line 284: /opt/lampp/sbin/proftpd: No such file or directory
XAMPP: Error 127! Couln't start ProFTPD!
/opt/lampp/bin/mysql.server: line 1: /opt/lampp/bin/my_print_defaults: No such file or directory
/opt/lampp/bin/mysqld_safe: line 1: ./bin/my_print_defaults: No such file or directory
/opt/lampp/bin/mysqld_safe: line 1: ./bin/my_print_defaults: No such file or directory
XAMPP for Linux started.
root@email:~# uname -a
Linux email 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 #1 Wed Jun 1 01:03:08 CEST 2005 x86_64 GNU/Linux



Further example of my problem:

First time user of XAMPP myself so I suppose this isn't much help but I can say that it works rather nicely on my Debian Sid AMD64 box.
AMD 64 3200+ @ 2400 MHz
2x512M Mushkin pc3200
Debian SId
Kernel 2.6.11
