Getting cracklib to work... makes me tired.

I am running a redhat fedora core 3 machine with XAMPP installed on it. I want to use the crack() fuction from cracklib. I can't seem to install in on the XAMPP installation. I tryed running my configure line from my phpinfo() with the line "--with-crack=Dir of crack files". I have another webserver that came with redhat installed though not running and cracklib does appear to be installed already. When I try to run any of the rpm packages is yells at me that it is already installed.

When I tryed to run pear install crack from the xampp dir I got this error:

You'll need the XAMPP development package. You find at the same place where you downloaded XAMPP.

Done and done...

So what exactly am I doing now...
I got pear to install crack to my lampp dir... though I had to do it manually. For some reason phpize fails all the time with different packages when I install through pear... any Idea why this might be?

Now do I try to configure and make php? If so, is there somewhere in lampp that I should do this or do I download a php source and do it.
