XAMPP 8.0.6: FTP user & password for WordPress

Postby claus_01 » 13. May 2021 13:20

Hi all,

I'm franky not sure if this is XAMPP related or WordPress related, so I'll post it here first. I just installed XAMPP 8.0.6 under Ubuntu MATE 20.04, and also installed the latest WordPress version 5.7. So far, everything runs fine, but I would like to upload a theme using FTP, and I don't seem to know the proper combination of username & password. I tried 'nobody'& 'xampp' but this wasn't accepted by WordPress. How can I find out the right combination in order to proceed?

TIA,

Claus

Found a solution/workaround myself via Google. Added the following code at the bottom of wp-config.php:

Code: Select all
define('FS_METHOD','direct');

This solved my problem--at least sort of. ;-) Now I could upload & install the WordPress theme I had downloaded.

The configuration file of Xampps proftpd installation is /opt/lampp/etc/proftpd.conf

Simply looking into that configuration shows that user "daemon" and password "xampp" is default for "localhost". The FTP home folder then is /opt/lampp/htdocs

I think you have to configure WordPress properly with this credentials (and also apply the correct WordPress installation folder).

Of course you can use direct installation for a local WordPress installation, but in case of a remote internet installation you MUST setup FTP properly.
