Ignorant New XAMPP User

Postby bsp1315 » 09. November 2004 18:07

Hello My Friends,
I started with MS Access database, then MySQL, and then PHP. After individually testing my database with these tools, I wanted to serve this database. I installed Apache from Apache friends and integrated with MySQL & PHP. Here now I stumbled on XAMPP and installed (Removing all other previous downloads, I need to say this because XAMPP does not work well when there is residual various versions of MySQL & PHP). I tested all the PHP scripts from Zend site, the PHP for beginners. I loaded my entire Database on to XAMPP through a separate DB Tool. Next I secured my database with password utilizing Apache forum topics. I am glad everything is working fine.

Now the question is, how do I serve my database to be used by clients to populate the data? I nearly searched all the possibilities within the Forum for answers to my needs. Pardon my ignorance, Could any of you guide me how can I do this. So far, I tried with VirtualHost and I could get while testing (with the site http://127.0.0.1/database placed in htdocs/Dtabase folder) the following screen:
Index of /database
Name Last modified Size Description

Parent Directory -
1x1.php 28-Oct-2004 11:22 198

Apache/2.0.52 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.0.52 OpenSSL/0.9.7d PHP/5.0.2 Server at 127.0.0.1 Port 80

When I clicked Parent directory I can get Splash screen. The 1x1.php will give results of php script.

The question is not of Splash screen. As a test I wanted to see this result in another computer, before I give authentication, authorization and access to small group of people who populate the database as clients. The XAMPP and database is my workplace computer and I tried to get sites from my Home computer with the above http://127.0.0.1/database . I get the usual big message, you all know. Am I right in these exercises so far. Your help is highly appreciated.

By the way My computer at my work place is a Windows 2000 advanced server with full administrative privileges.

I'm going to assume your still talking about MySQL, right?
If so, you can populate the database using phpMyAdmin.

It should come with Xampp and be located @
http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ or http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin/

Of that, that assumes your on that computer (both mean 'on that pc');
if not, replace localhost/127.0.01 with a IP of the computer.

Thank you Jonathan,
I never thought you will be so fast. I got your point and already tested in my work computer. I need to get it in my "computer at my house". Is it a dumb question. I doubt my own question. I will try again in my house computer to access my page first and think about MySQL afterwords. One at a time.

First off, if the computer @ work has to clear any firewalls,
such as in the router--- configure those to let it work.
(This, I have no idea ~ my brother configured our router.)

Second off, if the computer @ work has a software firewall,
which IMHO it should, make sure you configure it to allow connections
to the various XAMPP programs (Apache, PHP, MySQL).

Third, before leaving work get the IP of the computer
(go to http://whatip.com) and write it down.

@home try going to http://xxx/phpmyadmin (xxx = ip #).
See if that works.

And of course, make sure the computer @ work doesn't get shut off.
If you have to, leave a note to make sure the janitor or night shift doesn't :lol:
