XAMPP MariaDB version (10.4.20) - why that one?

Postby DavidEsp » 07. August 2021 22:23

I see that the latest XAMPP version 8.0.9 contains MariaDB 10.4.20
I am not complaining, but is there a reason why the latest versions of 10.4 (10.4.21) or 10.5 or 10.6 are not being used?
Like are they best avoided in general for some reason? Or offer no relevant benefits within this package?

I appreciate that, being a central component, any change to the database component might possibly imply a big analysis/testing/code-change workload.

I only ask this question as part of getting a "feel" for MariaDB's versions and their possible issues or benefits.

Incidentally I recently found a problem with MariaDB 10.6. I tried using MariaDB 10.6 (10.6.3 and 10.6.4) with the latest version of application RadioDJ, and during database setup (via that app) got an error: "Key not found". In contrast, that app worked fine with the latest MariaDB versions of series 10.4 (namely 10.4.21) and 10.5 (namely 10.5.12).

I understand that the author of RadioDJ, Marius Vaida, is working on solving a compatibility issue with MariaDB version 10.6 :D
