Is XAMPP a substitute for WAMP server

Postby mrwmrutski » 08. December 2020 03:22

Hello All just signed on and I am looking to move forward in my studies of web development. I had it mentioned to try and install Wampserver to get started with data bases. Plus the other needed required software packages, Apache, phpMyAdmin and so on.

I came across this as an alternative. I am totally new to to this and wondering how they compare, or do they both perform the same tasks.

Are there performance differences or is one a more modern technology, approach to handling Data Bases info.

I am also home schooling myself in this so it is a bit difficult to figure old on my own. Just looking for some support and shared experience. From those who are familiar to it and know what they are doing. Compared to me.
I am running Windows version 10 if that has any bearing on how the two compare.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies and your time.

Hi,

XAMPP and WAMPServer are both precompiled Webserver Stacks.
XAMPP focusses a little bit more on portability, tries to be also working without changing system environment variables, registry keys, etc.
XAMPP is cross platform (Windows, Linux, MacOS), while WAMPServer is Windows only.
WAMPServer focusses more on modularisztion.
XAMPPs community is german/english, WAMPServers is french/english.

At the end it is up to you which one to choose. Use the tool that makes you most efficient.

Thank you very much for your reply. As for the bit of research I have done in comparing the two. I did see they share the same tools to preform the same tasks. I was not sure if one was a new technology or had a better, new approach to doing the same job. The way jQuery was the standard and now React, Vue or Angular have stepped up to take the leading rolls. Though I have no experience with them and only a novice with JavaScript as well. I am and have been trying to get a full understanding of what is needed. Your answer has helped.

Following a few Facebook JavaScript groups and Udemy Developer Course user links, they all are mentioning or focusing on is MongoDB. The very little I know of it is that its focus is Cloud based. I may be wrong but like I said I am just getting it to this. I have not found them offering any details on the above two Web Server services. I have just got established with GitHub and using its offered Web Pages so this was the next steps I thought I should look into. As well as to host a full site for myself with a provider.

A lot to take in and feeling comfortable, even though it is very confusing at first. A great journey to say the least and home schooling it add a great deal to it. I do see myself progress. A year ago I was afraid to open a command line and had no computer knowledge at all. Again thanks for your explanation and I know I will be back as I try and figure this all out.

stay safe out there and ... Peace

Neither XAMPP nor WAMPServer included MongoDB.
XAMPP included some modules, WAMPServer don't provide, like Strawberry Perl, Apache Tomcat, MercuryMail and FileZilla FTP Server. So if you want to learn Perl or Java Server Pages (JSP), XAMPP would be the better choice. But the main Components both are sharing are Apache HTTPd, PHP, MariaDB and phpmyadmin.
XAMPP uses only open source modules, even the XAMPP own programmings like the control panel is open source and delivered with every XAMPP installation. WAMPServer is partly closed source AFAIK.

I realize MongDB is not a part of either XAMMP or WAMP and that is why I am here. Those few groups are all focusing on that or AWS and Cloud based services. And their teaching approach is to just install it and follow along with what they say. I like to wander a bit and explore along the way. Thanks
