Error messages after shutting down XAMPP and quitting

Postby Zia3000 » 16. November 2020 06:22

Hi there. Hope everyone is well.
I am good with computers but a total noob with xampp.
I used it to set up a local host for wordpress webiste testing, so i can try out themes, and preview sites for clients, etc.
Finally got everything to install correctly but i now notice that when i stop the apache and mysql services and then hit quit to close the program, that i get a few error dialog boxes.
the 1st one says: "Error: Cannot create file "D:\xampp\xampp-control.ini"
the second: The instruction at "(a very long number) referenced memory at "(a second long number)". The memory could not be read. Click ok to terninate the program."
when I click OK to terminate the program i get another error: "Exception EAccess violation in module xampp-control.exe at 0025b2ae"
Then if i click to close that dialog it finally shuts those error messages and closes.
I have noticed others have posted about this but saw no solutions provided.

Could this be caused by my installing xampp on my secondary "D" drive?
(I had read that it was ok to install on a different drive though recommended on c drive.)
I also use Norton 360 in case that is causing a conflict.
Any help you can give is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

The problem is not related to your very own installation.

Here is a similar thread with statement of the XAMPP developers:

best wishes,

Thanks Altrea. But I am not sure that I understand.
Should I just allow these error messages to appear and click through them every time I shut down xampp?
Or do i need to fix something?
sorry if this is a dumb question. I am very new to xampp.

There is a serious vulnerability in the way the xampp control panel is using the ini configuration file. To fix this the xampp developers mad ethe ini file read only for only users.

You can click through them if you don't mind (you will not be able to save any changes to the control panel configuration file). Or you can start the control panel as administrator. Last possibility would be to make the ini file writable for users again but this would reopen the vulnerability.

Thanks,
How do I start the control panel as admin?
and would you suggest that over just clicking through the errors?
My main need is for wordpress to function and use it for testing locally. So i doubt I would need to change the control panel config file...is that correct?

I would always prefering to start the control panel as administrator.
My main reason for this recommandation is, that the control panel has some prechecks for checking of the ports or service names are in use and if the process is not running as administrator, you will not get important informations about the blocking process like the process name. If you want to register any of the components as windows services (to autostart them right at windows start without opening the control panel at all) you would also need administrator rights. And if you want to change any settings in the control panel.
But some users do not have administrator rights on the conputer so it is not possible for every user.

To run the control panel as adinistrator simply right click the xampp-control.exe and choose "run as Administrator"
