Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

My environment
Win10
Xampp 3.2.4
10.4.14-MariaDB
Apache/2.4.46 (Win64)
PHP version: 7.4.11
phpMyAdmin: 5.0.3
Joomla: 3.9.22 Stable
I have 3 Joomla websites running ok and they've been running ok for a long time. I recently upgraded from Win7 to Win10. They are still running ok.
I downloaded a Joomla backup from a live site I maintain which uses https.
After Akeeba install of this website and turning off https at install time the front-end of the website displays the home page but crashes (404 page not found) on any other selection and the back-end allows selection of menu items but displays many strange symbols.
Any hints about what I have forgotten to do here will be gratefully received.

HTTP status 404 not found is pretty much self explaining.
In most of the cases you will have a problem with the site base url and/or permalinks.
So mainly a Joomla configuration issue.

Thanks for that fast reply. Renaming the .htaccess file sorted out the front-end but the back-end is still playing up with the strange characters.

Well the strange characters were replacements for the Icomoon fonts!
I found that the "media" directory had been incorrectly excluded from the Akeeba backup rather than the "images" directory. That meant that the Iconmoon fonts were not available.
All is well now.
