Resolving domains both on localhost and remotehost

Postby optimisticwalker » 02. September 2018 15:31

It would be very much appreciated if xampp could find a way to resolve live domain names defined in local system host file and apache configuration files .

The concept is that if apache is active on local machine resolve entries defined in host, httpd.conf, httpd-vhosts.conf and httpd-ssl.conf, etc first. if apache is inactive resolve DNS records.

XAMPP cannot solve that issue for you. That is a pure windows tcpip stack issue.
The time any XAMPP component will get in touch with a http(s) request is way way after all the dns magic has been done.
We don't provide any support via personal channels like PM, email, Skype, TeamViewer!

It's like porn for programmers 8)

I'm using a windows host switcher. That's serving the same purpose alternatively.

Domain names declared in hosts file are automatically resolved locally anyway, i dont understand the purpose of that request?!

Fine. You should use that, if it solves your request.

In this case developers can use that exact domain names, urls & navigation menu those they use for their production/live websites and check the website both on localhost and remote host at the same time without any change.

If
windows hosts file
can be switched on the fly,
gethostbyname function
in webpage syntax and
symlink
on remote server in applicable cases can take care of the rest. So developers can save their time and effort.

I totally agree, very usefull for development (and i do it just like that), but i still cant get why you need an extra tool or a Xampp enhancement or what - my tool is Notepad or any other editor, it takes me less than a minute to edit the hosts file and apply the changes i need - thats it! You might speed up that whole thing by putting a link to the hosts file onto you desktop so you can edit it with a simple double click - isnt that easy and quick enough?

Yes, it can be done that way too but host switcher is helpful when you are developing many websites locally at once and checking those onlie frequently.

I still dont get it. I can enter as many lines into the hosts file as i like. Thousands, if necessary. It still needs less than a minute to add or remove hosts.

We definitely can do that but a hosts switcher simply automates the process and performs all the tasks in a single click.
