How do I tell XAMPP to use an existing MySQL server

Postby DerekElliott » 09. June 2018 02:49

I've just installed XAMPP and when I click the Start button for MySQL it doesn't run. The log includes
2018-06-08 15:11:31 5040 [ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: No such file or directory
2018-06-08 15:11:31 5040 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?
2018-06-08 15:11:31 5040 [ERROR] Aborting

When I try to install Joomla it can't connect to the server. How do I tell XAMPP/Joomla to use the existing server?

Thanks

Usually PHP Scripts simply connect via TCPIP Port 3306, if your existing MySQL is running on Port 3306, it should work out of the box (simply dont start the Xampp MySQL server).

You should provide more detailed information why Joomla failed (there should be a detailed error message), maybe you dont provide wrong credentials (User, Password, Database) for the existing MySQL server. Usually it would be easier to stop and/or deinstall the other MySQL server and then start Xampps MySQL. As there we know the preconfigured users (we dont know anything about your existing MySQL).
