Any procedure to bring a website down to local host.

Is there any step by step instructions out there anywhere maybe on another site giving the requirements for bringing a live site down to the local host and running..
For example do i need to go into the options file and change the domain name to localhost or will it auto change those names in the option file for me.
Next we know the site code is full of full blown urls.. does the localhost know to use local host or will it try to use the thousands of urls thruout the content.

So bottom line am i on my own or can someone help with this.
Do i need to run serch and replace to change all the urls to local host.. wow.. how unhandy.. to do all that just to test the site.

This is highly dependend to the specific application you want to migrate.
There is no global way of doing this.
Some applications need to have config file changes, some need database field changes, some need .htaccess file changes, some need Apache config changes, some need PHP config changes, some need to rerun the installation script again, some need no changes at all.

So the support channel and manual of the specific application is the best spot finding the migration instructions.

Anyway, dont change the code to run on localhost, just do it vice verse (what is by far easier and less work), simply make your local host look like the online server. Adapt the servername to the hosts file (in many cases your already done), if necessary, also adapt pathnames (i.e. DocumentRoot etc.) to your local host.
