Error while installing XAMPP on Windows 8.1

As I try installing XAMPP on my Windows 8.1 laptop, I get the following message as the installer nears the end:
Apache HTTP server has stopped working.
After dismissing the notice, the installer eventually goes on, but I am unable to start Apache or install it as a service. I only get error codes in the XAMPP control panel.
