Cant update XAMPP

I've downloaded and run the newest version of XAMPP but I cannot update it because the file directory is not empty!

I cannot delete it because it is open in another program.

There is no option to update XAMPP in XAMPP.

Do I really need to select another directory and have some random files always lurking on my PC because its not possible to overwrite them with a new version.

Exactly. As Xampp is not only a very large and sophisticated webserver package, it also gives you the opportunity of installing various projects like WordPress, Joomla and many more and even your own projects. There is no way to upgrade all these tools automatically, what would be necessary for a Xampp update, this is by far too complicated and needs lots of user interaction.

If you simply overwrite the existing Xampp, you overwrite ALL installed projects, including ALL HTML/PHP files, including ALL SQL Databases and many many more - that would definately result in a completely destroyed environment. I dont think you would like to destroy all your projects.

And to add to what Nobbie said, there is no randomness to it. Only you select where to install it. If they are lurking there, you or an alternate personality put it there.
