Clarifications Before Installation

I want to work on a WordPress website locally and when I initially searched for a local server, the first three sites I checked out suggested using WinAMP. After downloading the necessary C++ environments, I downloaded it and everything looked good. I didn't configure it. The next day I went to upload some photos and the Windows AutoPlay tool wasn't working. When I opened my photo editor, it froze and crashed. My whole computer (Windows 7) was extremely sluggish. Since installing WinAMP was the only recent activity, I decided to do a system restore to remove changes to my computer, but that failed.

So I went to a second computer on the same wi-fi network and the autoplay on that computer did not work either. When I searched my folders, I found lock icons on many, and when I attempted to change permissions, I found that WinAMP's permissions could not be altered because they were granted at the parent level.

I resolved my problem by uninstalling WinAMP on the first computer and by doing a successful system restore on the second.

My AutoPlay photo/video tool is broken on both computers.

Perhaps XAMPP is a better program to act as a local server? Before I install it, I want to make sure this isn't going to happen again. Do I need to configure it following download to assign which media types it handles? Would another program be better for me? I am technologically challenged and really don't know what I'm doing!

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

WinAMP is a famous MP3 player. WAMPServer is a well known webserver bundle. Are you sure you mean WinAMP?
WAMPServer and XAMPP should both not influence any Autostart functionality. You donÄt need to adjust any media types.

best wishes,

I don't know how I got this messed up, thinking WinAMP would work as a local server. I really nothing about what I'm delving into here.

Does it matter, which program I use, WAMPServer or XAMPP? Is one more non-tech friendly?

Thanks.

Running a web-server is not "non-tech friendly". It requires lots of knowledge anyway.

What is the difference between these two programs?

Between XAMPP and WAMPServer? Both are precompiled webserver bundles.
Philosophie and configuration of both are a little bit different but not that much.
Try both out and use the one which is more comfortable for you.
