Moving Xampp and Wordpress to new computer

Hello! :D

I really need some help. I've currently got Xampp on my laptop and I'm building a Wordpress website locally (I have Windows 7 on my laptop). I've just bought a new computer with Windows 10 and would like to transfer everything across so I can continue to work on my website from there. Ive looked at various forums but I don't know much at all about computers and I'm really struggling to do this. Ive not a clue!

I'd really appreciate some assistance with this,
Thank you!

Claire

Hi Claire,

Do you want to transfer your XAMPP environment once or do you want to be able to simultaniously work on your webapplication on both systems?

If this is a one time transfer that is pretty easy. Simply copy over your whole xampp directory. This contains everything needed, wordpress files, database, etc.

best wishes,
Altrea

Hey Altrea,

Thank you so much for your reply. I guess I only need to transfer it once since my laptop is running very slowly and so I will continue building my new website on my new computer now. Can you tell me exactly how to do this? Do I need to download Xampp on my new computer first?

Thanks again!
Claire

I would only copy the whole xampp folder. You don't need to download and install xampp. Your existing XAMPP installation is pretty much portable.
Just keep the path of the new XAMPP installation consistent to your current one. So if you have installed xampp to C:\xampp simply copy it over to path c:\xampp on your new system.

No downloads.

a) take an USB Stick

b) stick it into the old laptop

c) copy the c:/xampp folder to that stick

d) unplug the stick, put into the new laptop/PC

e) copy the folder xampp from the USB stick to c:

Ready.

No, dont download WordPress, it should be in your Xampp folder.

How did you manage to install WordPress, if you dont remember where it is? Usually its beyond the htdocs folder. Maybe in a subfolder like "wordpress" or "wp", or maybe directly in htdocs, without any subfolder between. You should know that.

and I'm not quite sure how to open my site!

Same as before, enter http://localhost or http://localhost/wordpress or similar in your browser. You *really* should know how to call your WordPress, I cannot do that for you, i did not install it on your Computer. Of course you have to start Xampp before calling WordPress. As you copied Xampp onto your new Computer instead of running an installation, you might lack the Xampp Control Icon. You will find the Xampp Control in c:/xampp/xampp-control.exe. Simply create a link on your desktop to that file and then click it.

If you installed WordPress from the Bitnami app you find the WordPress files not in htdocs but in the apps folder

Thank you, I have found all the wordpress files in the wp folder. Everything I have done so far I did by reading tutorials, online forums and books but I don't really have much knowledge in any of this so I don't always remember how I did certain things! I'm not really sure what to do now, and I can't seem to open localhost on my new computer. Also, when I press 'start' on the Ampps control panel nothing happens. :|

Your help is very much appreciated! :)

There is by far not enough information for any clue. You should get professionell help or stay on the old Laptop. I dont think that we can manage all the problems via this forum, sorry. If you even do not remember how you installed the software, it is definately impossible to go any deeper. I give up at this point.

AMPPS is not XAMPP. AMPPS is an alternative Webserver stack for which we cannot provide any support.
