XAMPP installation problem

PostPosted: 23. March 2016 11:29

Trying to instal a new version of XAMPP (https://downloadsapachefriends.global.ssl.fastly.net/xampp-files/5.5.33/xampp-win32-5.5.33-0-VC11-installer.exe?from_af=true - also https://downloadsapachefriends.global.ssl.fastly.net/xampp-files/7.0.4/xampp-win32-7.0.4-0-VC14-installer.exe?from_af=true).

The installation appears to proceed normally but near to the end, Windows first gives a message that Apache Server failed and searches for a solution and offers to close the application. After the Close is executed another failure comes up for CLI. After that is closed the installation reports that it completed successfully and opens the Control Panel. Trying to start Apache from the CP shows the message that Apache is Running but then the Windows failure message comes again and CP gives Apache Unexpected failure etc message. Using the .bat file or starting the .exe file throws no more light on the matter and log files do not exist. All of the relevant directories and sub-directories seem to exist but running uninstall does not empty the xampp directory and it has to be deleted to make another attempt at installing.

Any thoughts?

Good afternoon,

Further to my original post, I thought I would add the text from the CP.

Between the 2:19:54 and the 2:20:13 entries, the Windows Apache failed pop-up occurs.

From the apache_start.bat the only text that appears (in German and English) is 'Please close this command only for Shutdown. Apache 2 is starting...'. Then the Windows 'Apache HTTP Server has stopped working' etc and when the program closes the Command window disappears.

The Windows log on the General tab follows:
Faulting application name: httpd.exe, version: 2.4.17.0, time stamp: 0x561cc534
Faulting module name: libapr-1.dll, version: 1.5.2.0, time stamp: 0x561cc6a2

Faulting module path: C:\xampp\apache\bin\libapr-1.dll
Report Id: 0a03d1a6-f171-11e5-81bc-000d613fb08d

Starting the httpd.exe directly opens a Command window that stays open until the Windows pop-ups are finished with, but no text or commands appear.

This is probably as much light as I can throw on the problem at the moment but if there is anything else that might be of use, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You have installed the vc ++?
You try to install full vc ++ and run Setup_XAMPP.bat!
When done. Run XAMPP_Control.exe and install apche as a service
and restart your computer!

If it do not run, could be some settings of apache was wrong.

Hello Trong,
I have VC++ installed but the test php.exe failed. The thing is, with my earlier version of XAMPP everything works just fine.

I even uninstalled and downloaded a zip version just in case it was something to do with the installation package but that does exactly the same thing.

I don't see how there could be settings wrong as the package was straight 'out of the box' from the web-site.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hello again,

I ran a file called php_test.bat which starts off by searching for the VC++ installation which it happily reports as finding. It then goes on to run the php.exe file which fails as before with the CLI giving a Windows message and then goes on to suggest that the program (php.exe) might have failed because the VC++ package was not installed.

Very mysterious.

Hi Altrea,

There are six installed, 4 from 2008, 1 from 2010 and 1 from 2015.

The version numbers are 9.0.21022, 9.0.21022.218, 9.0.30729.4148 and 9.0.30729.6161 from 2008. 10.0.40219 from 2010 and 14.0.23026 from 2015.

Are there any more/others that I should have.

Thanks

HarryB

Hello Trong,

No error message. Just the Windows 'Apache HTTP Server has stopped working' pop-up. When the Close Program button is clicked the CLI just goes back to the C:\xampp prompt.

I will have a look at the links that you sent.

Thanks again

Hello again Trong,

I downloaded and installed those files. I now have more versions of VC than you can poke a stick at. Still made no difference so unstalled and re-installed XAMPP but it still failed during the installation at the same place. After closing the Windows failure windows and the installation went to completion, Control Panel opened and clicked to start Apache - no difference. The only log in the apache log directory was the install.log. Contents follow.

The screwy thing is that my 'old' version of XAMPP works just fine. My other thought is that, if the VC modules were a problem, that the installation module would have brought along its own valid set which makes one wonder what else the problem could be?

Thanks again.

Greeting all you experts out there,

I am wondering if my problem arises from the possibility that I am working on an old CPU (as a development computer) that doesn't feature SSE2 instruction set?

Thanks for any clarification.

I had a similar error show up in my Windows event log in a recent upgrade. In my case, the problem was that mod_rewrite was commented out in my httpd.conf file:

# LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

Uncommenting that fixed it.

To follow up on this, in general you should use a tool like Winmerge to ensure that the httpd.conf you are using matches the httpd.conf file that ships with the updated version of the server, then start adding back in any changes you know you made to the old httpd.conf file you were using.
