localhost:8080/xampp error

Postby Uthans » 14. October 2015 20:23

when I try to open localhost:8080/xampp, I am getting the following error page instead of xampp dashboard.

"Index of/xampp"
Name Last Modified Size Description
Parent Directory
Apache/2.4.16 (Win32) OpenSSL/1.0.1p PHP/5.5.28 Server at localhost Port 8080

When click on Parent directory, it lands to apachefriends web dashboard where I cant find any security settings. I am unable to configure the security settings as I can't access xampp dashboard.

After installing Xampp-win32-5.5.28-0-VC11, I had an issue with Apache port 80 and I changed to the following:

httpd.conf: Listen 80 changed to Listen 8080

ServerName localhost:80 changed to ServerName localhost:8080

In httpd-ssl.conf: Listen 443 to Listen 4433

<VirtualHost _default_:443> to <VirtualHost _default_:4433>

ServerName www.example.com:443 to ServerName www.example.com:4433

After changing into the above, no problems found on XAMPP control panel. apache status was running. However, I am not able access localhost:8080/xampp dashboard. Please help.

There is no help because all is fine.
The old orange administration page is gone and replaced by this new dashboard.

There is no need for additional security. Xampp is shipped safe enough as local test and development environment.

Great. Thanks for your reply. One last question. How do I set remote client access to facilitate my clients to view my work remotely.

Thanks once again.

There is no action required (for Xampp).

The clients have to reach the IP of the Xampp Server and/or the IP of the router, in case you are connected via Router to the internet. In that case, you also have to enable a portforwarding for port 80 (in your case port 8080) to the Xampp PC. BUT: Xampp is not suited for remote access, it is very unsafe for online access. It is meant as development environment, not as production environment.

This is a use case XAMPP is not designed for.
You want to provide a customer portal to serve internet or intranet requests.
Therefore you need a webserver designed against security. Each used component (Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc) needs to be hardened.
Simply put a password like the old XAMPP security was doing is by far not enough.
