i'v unpacked the 5.6.12 (7z) in a folder (no spaces etc.).
i run the xampp-control.exe as administrator (UAC activated by the way).
changed port 80 to 8081 (in httpd.conf as well on panel>config>service and port settings).
restarted xampp-control.exe

errors everywhere and not a clue. failed apache and mysql. the logs don't exist.

You used the 7z version.
Did you execute the setup_xampp.bat file after extracting?
