I'm still running 1.8.1 on what is now a Windows 10 PC. I'd like to bring the install up to date but don't know if there is any easy way to do it? Can I simply download the latest install package and run that, or will it take a clean install to get from 1.8.1 to current?

No. There is no upgrade functionality included.
You will need to export and backup all files and migrate (imort database and create database users, copy project files, etc) your projects to a fresh XAMPP installation.

Installing a new XAMPP version over an old existing one will commonly end in a corrupt installation.

Thank you for the reply.. it is what I'd suspected, though had hoped not to be true.. Sounds like a lot of work!
