i did the whole shebang... added virtual host.. made sure dns is configured correctly... so http://mysite.com works but http://www.mysite.com doesn't... is that a bit strange? i did nslookup for www.mysite.com and it points to the right DNS.. obviously my webserver is acting up.. any suggestions?

Have you placed the coresponding entry in the HOSTS file on your system?

Have you used both ServerName & ServerAlias in the Vhost DIR?
