Post upgradation issue from XAMPP 1.5.5 to XAMPP 5.6.3

Postby naimish88 » 05. May 2015 10:53

Hi,

Sometime back I upgraded the existing XAMPP 1.5.5 with 5.6.3 by unzipping the XAMPP 5.6.3 and replaced the existing files of XAMPP 1.5.5 with 5.6.3 except htdocs and MySQL/data.
I then restarted the apache server and hit the url http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin/. The site is working well but it still shows the older versions or MySQL and Phpmyadmin below is version details.
phpMyAdmin - 2.9.1.1
MySQL client version: 5.0.27
Did I use correct steps for up gradation or missing something or PHPMyAdmin/SQL versions are still same in XAMPP 5.6.3?
How to find the PHP/MYSQL versions in XAMPP ?, please advice me.

Information about XAMPP.
Existing XAMPP installer: xampp-win32-1.5.5-installer.exe
New XAMPP: xampp-win32-5.6.3-0-VC11.7z

In order to upgrade MySQL / PHPMyAdmin, you want to first:
1) backup your MySQL folder
2) Extract the new MySQL folder in place of the old one
3) Copy over the MySQL/Data folder from the old to new.
It should now show the new version of MySQL

I would not do that for one reason:
XAMPP 1.5.5 contains MySQL 5.0.27, XAMPP 5.6.3 contains MySQL 5.6.24. The differences between these two versions are very big.

I would export all custom databases (databases not already shipped with XAMPP) and import them again in the new XAMPP environment.

Hi Altrea,

The main intention is to upgrade the existing MediaWiki 1.12 associated with XAMPP 1.5.5 with MediaWiki 1.24 (latest) but you said that due do major version changes between mysql it is not advisable.
Is it OK, if I do fresh installation of XAMPP (supported with MediaWiki 1.24) and then export the existing wiki databases and import here.
Please help me with steps how can I export databases and import them here. Is there any XAMPP version who has MYSQL 5.0.2 and we can install MediaWiki 1.24 on that (mediawiki 1.24 requires mysql 5.0.2 or later and PHP 5.3.2 or later) ?

From XAMPPs point of view this will work, but if MediaWiki is working after that we cannot say.
You should read this first: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading

The upgrade guide i linked above contains mysqldump commands to backup the database. That should work.
Simply follow these instructions.

No. XAMPP 1.7.4 contains PHP 5.3.5 but MySQL 5.5.8.
I would try XAMPP 1.7.7 which was the latest and one of the most stable XAMPP versions with PHP 5.3.X

best wishes,
