Hi,

I am looking for a reasonably basic server to host some pages online.
What I wanted to know was. Is the XAMPP server configured in a secure state at the time of first install (out of the box)?
Or is this software more aimed at local testing than serving pages on the net?

no, not for public accessible environments.

XAMPP is meant and designed as local test and development environment.
