localhost not working website is not found?

Postby userapache1806 » 28. November 2014 09:14

hello all,

please advice on the issue I downloaded and had reinstalled xampp a few times because localhost not working.

POrt 80 is not used thus apache able to work fine yet when click admin to test local host "website not found? err connection timed out" (i used chrome)
so i tried to change to port 8080 in the httpd.config under the line listen 80 to listen8080 and in the servername 80 to servername 8080. test localhost by typing localhost:8080/ and then same results.

the localhost for the http.config file is 173.345.***.*** where * are other numbers I forgot I tot localhost should be 127.0.0.1?

thank you for helping!

This is a very strange description, "localhost" is not defined or set in httpd.config, but in the hosts file of Windows. You should use "localhost" in the LISTEN and in the ServerName Option, but these do NOT set localhost to any IP:

ServerName localhost
Listen 127.0.0.1

localhost is set to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file (which is not part of Xampp)

Oh sorry I wasnt quite get what you mean ? do U mean the listen 12.34.56.78 is not the defined as local host and should not be changed? I should change the servername localhost?

what should i do please englighten me. i pasted the code httpd.config for reference.

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/xampp/apache"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:logs

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78 :8080
Listen 8080

On your windows operating system is a directory called
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
In this directory is a file called
hosts
This file contains the definition of "localhost" eg:

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
Remove the # tag in front of 127.0.0.1 localhost
Maybe you have to reboot your system for this change to become active.
In any case, if you type in your browser: 127.0.0.1:\YourWebPageName and xampp is running, your webpage should come up.

# Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost

as shown above the code for host file in system32 did not have any # before 127.0.0.1 except the comment stated first. not sure y is there so many replicate localhost defined.

hmm so the httpd.con file what do I have edit/change to ensure it works?

I download xamp from apache website and did not delete or edit any codes except the listen 8080.

i would appreciate if i can solve this issue asap because i need it for my project. Thank you everyone who had helped.

One

127.0.0.1 localhost

in hosts file is enough, delete the duplicates.

What i cannot see: did you start Apache successfully? You do not mention anything about that. If Apache is not running, you cannot reach localhost.

ok i had deleted the duplicate 127.0.01 and leave only one, try starting it again but it doesn't work.

apache is working fine at port 8080. i download xampp, all work fine as indicated in the status in xamp control panel. but when I clicked admin nothing is displayed.

"Google Chrome's connection attempt to localhost was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured.

Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED"

p.s what about hash tag that altrea mentioned earlier in httpd.config?

the localhost finally works but when i clicked run with programming app, the code doesn't run to display the webpage displaying the code "file:///C:/xampp/htdocs/no/index.php". it should be running on localhost "http://localhost/no/index.php'. how can i configure my app to run automatically to localhost not typing out ??thank you.

This is a third party application problem for which we cannot provide any support.

I dont think so - in this case it sounds as if he simply "clicked" the Application in an explorer, instead of entering the appropriate URL in the browser:

Whatever is meant by "clicked run" in that description - simply click on this link instead (or enter the URL into your browser) and it *should* run: http://localhost/no/index.php or http://localhost:8080/no/index.php
