hi, All,

I am beginner to this xampp; I have two PC, one is win xp home, other is win 8.
however i saw that there is a lot of different version. how do i should select which one to use like:

Xampp 5.x.x and 1.8.x? what is the difference between them?

5.5.19 2014-11-19
5.6.3 2014-11-19
1.8.2 2014-08-21
1.8.3 2014-08-21

For win8, which version should I use?
If for winxp home, which version I should use?

many thanks

Hi saisai89,

Bitnami changed the version naming. For the current version the XAMPP version number is equal the included PHP version number.

All versions are able to run on Win8. Which version you should use depends on the application requirements.

You can use XAMPP versions 1.8.2 and lower. XAMPP 1.8.3 and XAMPP 5.X are not able to run on Win XP.

best wishes,

hi, Altrea,

thanks !

If I install XAMPP 1.8.2 onto portable USB from my win xp, is it possible to run XAMPP 1.8.2 in portable USB when I plug into another PC with Win 8?
by the way, how I make XAMPP portable?

thanks

yes, this is possible

The easiest way to create an portable XAMPP installation would be to use the portable version of the wanted XAMPP 1.8.2-X version: http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/f ... ows/1.8.2/

The other way would be to use the .zip version of the normal XAMPP 1.8.2 and extract it to the root of your usb drive, so that at the end you will have an xampp folder in the root of your usb drive. (DON'T use the setup_xampp.bat file because that would make your XAMPP installation driveletter dependend)

hi, Altrea,

Once I downloaded the portable version and unzip to the USB folder, it shows many files as below:

XAMPP start, setup_xampp, XAMPP control,..

what is the next step to setup and start?

thanks

You don't need to setup anything (but if you have choosen the portable version you can execute the setup_xampp.bat script). You just need to start the control panel and from there you can easily start the needed applications like Apache and MySQL

I doubleclick the setup xampp file, and it run in another DOS environment within which it shows the following:

"USB stick installation found! Using relative paths by default <my folder\xampp>.
Sorry, but ... nothing to do!"

What should I do?
