I have the exact same issue with the same log entries. I'm anxious to see the responses.

I see nothing in that log that explains anything. Try starting Apache from a command prompt (NOT as administrator) and see if it tells you anything. If not, have a look in the Event Viewer (Windows Adminstrator Tools).

Thanks for jumping in. Im way out of my element so I very much appreciate the help When i start from the command line with apache_start.bat I get

C:\xampp>apache_start.bat

Please close this command only for Shutdown

I did try changing list80 to listen 81 in httpd.conf and got a slightly different error

I should have assumed, but I hate to assume!
Something else is listening on port 80 & 443 (https).
Chances are you're running Skype, or IIS> If Skype, shut it off and try Apache. If Apache then works, there's the problem.

It's better to change the ports used in Skype and leave Apache listening on 80 & 443.
In Skype >tools>options>advanced>connections > untick use port 80 and 443 as alternatives - restart skype.

So just now I saw in the httpd.conf file 2 places that referenced port 80. I just changed them to 81 and restarted and xampp seems to be fine.

Is there any reason not to run it this way or should I press forward and figure out why it wont run on port 80

Thanks very much
