New user guide needed!

Hiya, I have a bit of a problem with making XAMPP work (as a simple test server for Phpbb mods). I have found htdocs and put some test files in it but I can't make it show up in a browser with the localhost URL. I've looked through the FAQ but this place is sorely in need of a new user guide. After some screwing about with the control panel I realised that Apache isn't starting up at all. All I can get out of it is this error:

Code: Select all
17:52:32  [Apache]    Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly.
17:52:32  [Apache]    This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies,
17:52:32  [Apache]    improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
17:52:32  [Apache]    Press the Logs button to view error logs and check
17:52:32  [Apache]    the Windows Event Viewer for more clues
17:52:32  [Apache]    If you need more help, copy and post this
17:52:32  [Apache]    entire log window on the forums

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? I have what I think is the latest version of this program.
