I have spent the best part of the day trying to change the root password of mySQL. None of the many (albeit rather similar) suggestions worked. Only then I found that the installation (Windows7/64) came with two config.inc.php-s: one in C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin and another one in C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\config. The latter is misleading, to say the least.
