Network users cannot access my website

Postby flukey » 25. November 2013 16:50

Hi all,

I have the strangest problem!

I have a demo website (magento) setup with xampp on windows 7, i used port forwarding so i can access my website from home, (xammp host is work pc) and this works fine. I can also access the website on my mobile, but nobody in our office can access the website!

My port forwarding points all http (80) requests to my pc, and this seems to work, but im unsure as to why network users are struggling to get onto the site at all?

Please let me know if you need any more information or if you have a resolution

My pc (Windows 7)
Network user (Windows 7)
Home pc (Windows 7)

Work router (Belkin F5D7633)
Work Switch (Cisco sg200-50p)

If anyone wants the website address please pm me as i dont want it to be caught by any search engines (nothing illegal, but it is a beta version of our site and privacy is a must :) )

Thanks in advance for any help

Rob

Because that is not a valid XAMPP version number

Odd, checked the readme, i have version 1.8.2,

It confused me as to why the xampp control panel says "XAMPP Control Panel v3.2.1"

Because that is the version number of that specific component.
Apache will tell you version 2.4.4, which is Apaches specific versions number.
Every component has their own version number.

The control panel is basicly independend from the XAMPP version (you can download the control panel as single component and use it on different XAMPP versions).

No, we don't provide any support for accessing XAMPP from insecure networks like the internet.
XAMPP is designed and supported as local test and development stack.

Does local testing not include another computer on my network? If we are trying to design/develop a website it is a lot easier for colleagues to suggest changes by being able to visit the website in their own time as opposed to from home (they are not paid to work outside of work hours) .

I know i am asking for "free" help, but i am unsure as to why you are taking the time to reply if you are not going to be helpful in any way whatsoever.

This server is used solely for production, i was just surprised as to why nobody on my network can access it. but i can from home :S.

What he is getting at is that local means local vice remote. Local installations help protect you and your network from being compromised in the event of bad/insecure code. He is just trying to protect your interests.

If you can access it remotely but they can't, then they are doing something different than you or you are set up different than they are. So many variables, it is hard to guess at what the problem might be without you troubleshooting where you think the problem is located.

Maybe, maybe not. That depends on the specific environment. But that is not the point. Your environment is not a secured local or at least small intranet environment development server any more. The result of this could be that your whole network protection can be influenced by this public accessible XAMPP server.

You can for sure use XAMPP for all needs (including big Intranet servers or piblic accessible live servers) relating to the specific license of each module, but the scope of support at this board here is following the "no public accessible servers" rule for good reasons. We don't want insecure public accessible XAMPP servers.

Because i thought giving you information about the version numbering of the components can be helpful too especially if you try to find an answer on other questions with the help of the board search or search engine. The alternative would be to don't get an answer at all and don't know why.
