Can't start MySQL in Windows 8

Postby mikemcg » 03. November 2013 14:26

I've installed XAMPP 1.8.3 on my Windows 8 system using the .msi package. I can start Apache, Tomcat and FileZilla without any problems but MySQL starts and immediately exits. I've checked the firewall settings and there is the appropriate exception for mysqld. I've killed Skype to see if there was a port conflict there but that didn't work. I've run netstat -o and there isn't a port conflict on port 3306. Various pertinent logs are below. I'm suspicious about the lines in the mysql_error.log at the end:

2013-11-03 08:21:59 7808 [Note] - '::' resolves to '::';
2013-11-03 08:21:59 7808 [Note] Server socket created on IP: '::'.

but I don't know what that means.
