Hi,
If you use the zip install is there a way to control what is installed
for example if i do not need tomcat ?

Short answer: no, because it is no installation, it's an extraction. You could choose which folders to extract and which not, but that's not recommend because everywhere in the XAMPP files could be back references to this missing folders.

Maybe XAMPP portable lite is what you need. This package doesn't contain some components like Tomcat.
