Which version to download?

Hi,

I want to use xampp for some of my school projects but I'm not sure which version to download. What is the recommended version to download for beginners, 1.8.2 or 1.8.3?

Also I see the size of the 1.8.2 installer is listed as 102 mb but when I attempt the download it from sourceforge it is only 99.6 mb. Is that the correct download?

Depends which applications (and their requirements) you want to use with XAMPP.
Some milestone versions of XAMPP which are recommend:

• XAMPP 1.6.8 (last version with php 4 switcher)
• XAMPP 1.7.1 (last version with PHP 5.2.X)
• XAMPP 1.7.3 (last version with MySQL 5.1)
• XAMPP 1.7.7 (last version with PHP 5.3.X)
• XAMPP 1.8.2-2 (current version with PHP 5.4.X)

XAMPP 1.8.3-X (versions with PHP 5.5.X and MySQL 5.6.X) are not recommend. Most big webapplications are not bullet proof tested on that new versions and there is a known bug with XAMPP and MySQL 5.6

On sourceforge the XAMPP 1.8.2-2 installer version is listed with 104.5MB.
At the end the file has a size of 104,480,768 Bytes which is 102,032 KBytes which is 99,64 MBytes. I think that the difference is a calculation mismatch (divided by 1000 instead of 1024).
If you are unsure if you get a valid file, you can check the MD5 checksum with a third party tool.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I will go with 1.8.2 as I only need the most basic functionality (mainly testing the code for my website).

Thank you for the explanation about the download size. The 99.6 mb I was referring to is according to the download prompt that comes up from sourceforge. The size for version 1.8.3 is the same in the download prompt as it is listed on the website however. Of course I referred to the official website (www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html) for my download. I assume the links there are safe.

I wanted to avoid downloading a third party tool to verify the checksum. I was just hoping that someone could confirm the same results, seeing a size of 99.6 mb in the download prompt when downloading from sourceforge using Firefox.
