Trouble with displaying http://localhost

I have followed the directions in the installation to the word and installed XAMPP to it's root directory, used the setup file and tried using the apache_start file and the xampp_start file to try and see if the webpage loads up but I'm still having problems. Could this be due to the fact that my computer is on a router and networked to another computer?

Thanks for all those that respond :)

I have the same problem (and seemingly the same setup) as Jono. My Wins Xp Pro machine is connected to a hardware firewall/router, and I'm having trouble connecting to http://localhost/

When I try to start the apache_start.bat file, I get a brief glimpse of a DOS window which suddenly disappears. It's not visible long enough to see what it says.

I installed Xampp using the Windows installer, and as far as I can see, everything installed correctly.

I can see the file:///C:/xampp/xampp/install/start.html page when it loads up, but accessing the http://localhost/xampp/lang.php?en page results in a "The page cannot be found" error.

As someone suggested in another thread, I have opened a CMD window and tested the syntax with:
D:\xampp\xampp\apache\bin>apache -t
which gives "Syntax OK"

But it seems that an apache\httpd.conf file which I should have, has not been created at some point. I'm assuming that's where my problems lie.

Thanks in advance for your help.

xampp displaying php

frustrated - I am a first time user so I hope any bad advice I give will be corrected!

I just installed this on an XP machine. I think you have to run setup_xampp.bat if you have not yet. I had the same problem you are describing.

Also, the default install was to Program Files and I cut/paste this to the C: root folder and changed the install shortcuts if necessary (was not sure if the space in Program Files was an issue).

I am still trying to get my first PHP page to display in local host as well.

My xampp_start.exe starts the dos window and says Please Wait then:

###APACHE + MYSQL IS STARTING NOW ###

The index.php In XAMPP for Windows (index.php), the status says that PHP is activated (along with MySQL, HTTPS, CGI & SSI).

Opps, my mistake was not including the file in the "htdocs" folder. I can view *.php files fine now.

Well I gave up trying to make Xampp work on Windows. Downloaded Mandrake 10.0, installed it and running Xampp on it. Had no problem accessing the localhost, and changing/setting up passwords.
Ofcourse, by Merphys law as soon as I post this it would probably stop working. :D

Gentlemen,
Do you think that it is good to install server on OS Drive?
Please bear in mind that if your server get hacker's attack, your OS drive system will be dangerous.
If your server is out of order, you can fix it.
When your OS is trouble, however, you cannot run server.
That is why hard drive is devided to OS and logical drive separately to protect system.

T4, it is a good idea to devide OS drive and Server drive to each other.
When you install xampp, Drive:/xampp/xampp/..... is not good.
Just do Drive:/xampp/....
