Xampp Crashing/Restarting

Hope someone can help. After running happily for a year or so, a few days ago Xampp started crashing. Just about open a page, maybe a second, then force closing. The error message is:

About the only thing I can see which repeats in the error log at the same time is:

[error] VirtualHost _default_:443 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results

As an incidental point, the CMS I use has defaulted to URLs as domain.com/index.php/page instead of domain.com/page, despite still having the htaccess files in place as before.

The installation is running on Windows XP and accessing domains set up in the Windows hosts file and in httpd-vhosts.conf as they have always been. The version of Xampp is 1.7.3, I have tried uninstalling completely and reinstalling a couple of times. The only thing changed after reinstallation is httpd-vhosts.conf to include the aliased domains/folders.

Also saw the note in the docs about uncommenting httpd-vhosts.conf in httpd.conf. Seemed to be for a Mac but tried anyway and just produces an error. I'm not running skype, or IIS, nothing had changed on the PC that I know of before this started happening.

I have tried to read up on the forum and in the docs, attempted other fixes but at a dead end after three days. Any ideas will be very welcome.

Just to let people know, in case they have a similar problem. Tried all sorts of fixes from the forum and elsewhere but no luck. Then downloaded version 1.7.7 instead, which I think is the highest we can go on XP. Installed this and the crashing has stopped.

Maybe there was an update elsewhere which conflicted, no idea but now at least stable and hoping this carries on. Just the rest of the issues to tackle now to get back where we were:)

Wasn't sure, may have misread elsewhere, been looking at hundreds of pages on Xampp the last couple of days.

Still never found out what the issue was originally, just pleased to have a solution. Looking at all sorts of error messages, suspect an auto update from Hewlett Packard which might have conflicted. Now disabled.
