Connect old MySql DB with fresh install of Xampp?

Postby CraftyMc » 27. June 2013 20:15

Hi, I recently uninstalled xampp then reinstalled it again because it wasn't working right, I already have MySql installed with the database setup instead of using the Xampp preconfigured one and I set it to start at windows start up.

So when I launched the Xampp CP before MySql was already running the database I setup using the workbench, after I reinstalled xampp this time however it doesn't say MySql is running but when I check my task manager it says it is running, How do I link the old MySql DB with the fresh install of xampp, remember I am not using the Xampp predefined one I am using the fully downloaded and installed MySql 5.6 server and workbench etc just for the simple fact that I used MySql before I had xampp for storing gaming server details.

if it helps any I get this error when trying to access PHPMyAdmin,

Xampp - MySql help?

Postby CraftyMc » 29. June 2013 00:09

Hello, I already have MySql installed with the workbench/enterprise edition because I use it frequently. How would I get my xampp to run that server instance instead of trying to create a new one? I get this error when trying to run MySql,
Code: Select all
Error: MySQL shutdown unexpectedly.
This may be due to a blocked port, missing dependencies,
improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another method.
Press the Logs button to view error logs and check
the Windows Event Viewer for more clues
If you need more help, copy and post this
entire log window on the forums

I know the problem, it's because I already have a MySql database/server running. What I can't figure out is how I make Xampp use this one instead of the built in version? I know it can be done because I have used Xampp in the past with my workbench except in the past it seemed to do it automatically I would start the Xampp CP and it would say MySql was already running because it was integrated into my workbench/enterprise edition, this time however it didn't seem to sync?
What changes do I need to make in what config files so as it uses the server already running on port:3306 instead of trying to create a new one?

[EDIT by Altrea: merged these two topics into a single one]

Hi,

if you are running a different MySQL server simply ignore these messages and don't try to start MySQL build in XAMPP.
Start your MySQL Server the way it is provided (maybe a windows service or Task icon).

If you want to use phpMyAdmin with your different MySQL installation, you maybe need to install or configurate phpMyAdmin for that server. But that is out of scope of the support radius of this forum.

best wishes,
