Can't get mysql to work

Postby bobofet » 21. June 2013 17:11

I just installed XAMPP 1.8.1 for windows on my Windows 7 Home premium computer. When I start the control panel I get this error>

MySQL Service detected with wrong path
Change XAMPP MySQL settings or
Uninstall/disable the other service manually first
Found Path: "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5\bin\mysqld" --defaults-file="C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5\my.ini" MySQL
Expected Path: c:\xampp\mysql\bin\mysqld.exe --defaults-file=c:\xampp\mysql\bin\my.ini mysql

And I when I try to start mysql it just says>attempting to start mysql service... but it never starts.

Then when I go to the localhost page and click on the status link it says that the mysql database is disabled.

And when I click on the phpmyadmin link i get "Access denied">Error MySQL said:

2002 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured). Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

But when I look at phpinfo i think it says its there>

I'm new to using an AMP or any of it's components actually. I usually just work with my hosting service for my website which has everything configured already. But I want to develop at home and then upload to my hosting service after to make it easier. I tried Wampserver but couldn't get that to work either. Any help please, thank you.

Hi bobofet,

There is already a MySQL Server installed on your system (at path C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5\). That is the root of your problem.

No. There is just a MySQL connection client implemented in PHP and some configuration parameters listed.

Stop or better uninstall the other MySQL server if you don't need it.

best wishes,

Thank you for fast response Altrea. :) Um, I uninstalled other mysql and even removed the folder but still getting same error. :(

Yes, at one time I tried to instal mysql, php, apache and phpmyadmin myself but found it too daunting. So, that's when I decided to get an AMP. I have never used the other mysql, so I don't know why its look at it. Especially when its not even there anymore. lol

Try this:
  • open your windows command line with priviledged administrator rights (rightclick context menu -> run as administrator)
  • type in sc delete mysql

This should remove the other mysql service and you can try to start XAMPPs MySQL again.

The red "X" is normal behaviour. It just indicates that you haven't registered a windows service for MySQL.
