HTML links do not work

I am new to XAMPP and am having an issue that is probably a simple one.
I have a website with multiple pages that are all linked together, there are also other links like the nav bar, images etc.
When I open my index.html from the browser using local host etc the pages and styles load up normally but the links don't work and the images don't load. Clicking on a link does nothing.
If I open the index.html from my text editor everything works fine. It seems like a XAMPP issue, I am sure there is a setting I am missing or something.
Any help would be great
