MySQL won't start

I've just attempted to start XAMPP for the first time in ages. It runs on a USB stick and I'm using Windows 7. I believe it's XAMPP version 1.7.3.

Using the control panel I can start Apache but MySQL will not start. I've discovered the following error in Z:\xampp\mysql\data\mysql.err which I assume will be helpful in diagnosis:

130309 18:36:00 [Note] Plugin 'FEDERATED' is disabled.
z:\xampp\mysql\bin\mysqld.exe: Table 'mysql.plugin' doesn't exist
130309 18:36:01 [ERROR] Can't open the mysql.plugin table. Please run mysql_upgrade to create it.
InnoDB: The log sequence number in ibdata files does not match
InnoDB: the log sequence number in the ib_logfiles!
130309 18:36:01 InnoDB: Database was not shut down normally!
InnoDB: Starting crash recovery.
InnoDB: Reading tablespace information from the .ibd files...
InnoDB: Restoring possible half-written data pages from the doublewrite
InnoDB: buffer...
130309 18:36:01 InnoDB: Started; log sequence number 0 67651
130309 18:36:01 [ERROR] Fatal error: Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table '' doesn't exist

Can anybody suggest what I can do to resolve this or if this has already been covered elsewhere?

Next, once I've resolved this, how do I upgrade my installation to the latest XAMPP version? I've installed it and got it running but how do I transfer the sites that I have running under the original version?

Many thanks in anticipation!

For the first issue, did you try to install/copy an installation over that one?
Did the drive letter change and does not match what is in your configuration files?

As for the upgrading question, you should review these:
