When I try to start mysql as a service, it opens for about 3 seconds and then closes and stays closed.
The green light never comes on in my control panel, which is supposed to say "running."

It does work if it's not a service, but I need that to use workbench.

Also, there's no report in mysql_error.log.

Suggestions?

Yes. look in the Windows Event viewer. check the System and Applications logs for errors.

Did you start the Control Panel via Run as Administrator?
