XAMPP Connection problem

Hi, I'm new to using XAMPP and building a website and any help would be greatly appreciated. My installation was running fine but now won't connect to the website I have built. I am running XAMPP 1.8.1 on Windows Vista 32-bit. Apache and MySQL are running and I can connect to the localhost and view the "Welcome to XAMPP for Windows!" screen. But now it has begun freezing when I try and connect to the WordPress site I have built. I get the error: "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request."
